Welcome to the Year 5 home page!
Class Teachers
Our class teachers are Mrs Oldfield, Mrs Connor, Mrs Evans and Miss Green (1:1 teaching assistant).
Long Term Overview
Reading
Children will receive a reading book, that will be changed as they become confident in reading it and complete an Accelerated Reader quiz. The quiz allows the child to showcase their knowledge of the book and ensures they have retained the required learning, before moving to another book. We will hear the children read throughout the week on a one-to-one basis. Children will also read to adults during other activities, such as Guided Reading. The reading books that are sent home should be practised regularly at home so that the children become fluent and confident, when reading. Our class novel for spring will be Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz.
Homework
In Year 5, children will receive spelling and timetables homework weekly, alongside their reading books. This is to enhance their learning in reading/maths – the children will be taught sounds and words throughout the week.
PE
Year 5 children will be completing all PE lessons on a Monday and Wednesday. The required uniform for PE is dark shorts, a plain white t-shirt and trainers.
Class Dojo
Within Year 5, Class Dojo is used to reward children where they can collect Dojo points. It should also be used to communicate with the teacher about your child.

Learning This Term
During the autumn term, Year 5 will use J.K Rowling’s, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, to develop their narrative writing skills; writing non-chronological reports, letters and diary entries through this. We will base some of our writing around ‘The Tale of Three Brothers’ and ‘Francis’ from Literacy Shed. In our science lessons, we will be covering the states of matter topic. Within this, we will complete various investigations that will include using ph scales to test whether a substance is an acid or alkaline, filtration through sieving and determining how dissolvable a substance is. During our art lessons, the pupils will be developing their drawing techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design and they will also learn about great artists. Towards the end of the autumn term, the pupils will complete their DT unit. They will create a pop-up book linked to the Vikings. In PE lessons, we will be learning how to play Tag Rugby through lots of fun and competitive games and activities. Computing lessons will consist of the pupils learning how to communicate and collaborate, they will also create web pages. During PSHCE lessons, our topic is ‘Families and Relationships’ where pupils will take part in lessons about respect, respectful relationships, challenging stereotypes, learning about marriage and friendships. Geography lessons will be based on the topic ‘Mountains’, where pupils will develop their knowledge of mountains throughout the world, identifying physical features of these. In History, pupils will explore the Viking invasion of Britain. It’s a very busy but exciting first term in Year 5!
